In In the Café, Sibylle Laubscher invites us into the lively yet intimate atmosphere of a cultural café. A man sits at the bar, women gather around a table and a pianist provides the soundtrack to the scene. It is a place to meet, to talk, to listen, or simply to sit quietly and watch the world go by.

The artwork was inspired by the artist's time working at Café Cheesmeyer, a cultural meeting place in Sissach, Switzerland. The experience of being part of this vibrant environment, with its encounters, conversations and music, provided the inspiration for this original linocut.

Cafés have long been places of artistic and intellectual exchange. They bring people together, offering a space somewhere between the public and the private, where strangers and friends briefly share the same world.

At 60 × 42 cm, In the Café was particularly challenging to print. Each impression was carefully burnished by hand, transferring the ink from the carved block onto the paper.

The physical nature of this process means that every print is slightly different. These subtle variations are part of the artwork's character, celebrating the individuality and imperfections that make handmade art so special.
