Frau am Herd (Woman at the cooker)
I am passionate about women's rights and equality.
As a former president of the Women's Career Network in Vienna and a female artist, I am keenly aware that women remain underrepresented in the art world.
Sometimes the frustration of not always being taken seriously because I’m a woman finds its way into my work. I was fascinated by this cooker and its lovely colours. In German, there's a phrase — "Frau am Herd" — much like the English expression "Tied to the kitchen sink."
In 1950s Britain, there was a group of artists known as the Kitchen Sink Painters because they painted everyday domestic scenes.
This particular cooker is found at 2,100 metres above sea level, in a mountain hut where I spent four summers painting. It's a beautiful, functional object — and for me, it also represents how I wish these outdated ideas belonged firmly in the past.
Now it stands preserved as a kind of "household art." So why not hang it in your kitchen? I love having art in the kitchen — it lifts the mood no end. If you have a sleek modern kitchen - why not add a bit of patina, history and charm with this unique original piece of art?
I will send this piece mounted on cardboard, carefully wrapped in cellophane and lovingly packaged with extra protection so it arrives in perfect condition, ready to frame.
