This painting is based on my grandfather’s “box of tools.” He was a wheelwright—crafting carriages and ladders for local farmers—and he also made the little wheelbarrow you see here. The mirror in the composition is a quiet self-portrait. I used to play in the wood shavings of his workshop, which is now my studio. Where it once smelled of freshly cut timber, it now smells of oil paint.
