The Nutcracker | The Mouse King - Original Mixed Media Figurative Painting on Paper
The Mouse King: A Little Danger in the Land of Dreams
Every fairy tale needs a villain. And what a magnificent villain the Mouse King makes!
The Mouse King is an original mixed media painting on paper inspired by the magical world of The Nutcracker.
I created this painting in December 2025 while drawing from a live model during the Royal Drawing School's Live Studio online stream.
Working from observation, I allowed my imagination to take over. The familiar human figure gradually found itself in a rather extraordinary world, confronted by the Mouse King, one of the most memorable characters in The Nutcracker.
With his enormous blue snout, watchful eyes and curling tail, the Mouse King seems to fill the picture with his presence. Beside him stands a smaller figure, caught in the middle of what might be a rather alarming encounter!
Is the Mouse King about to attack? Or is he perhaps not quite as fearsome as he would like us to believe?
I have always loved fairy tales and the way they allow us to explore our fears, hopes and dreams through extraordinary characters and impossible events.
In The Nutcracker, the Mouse King brings danger and excitement into a world of toys, dreams and enchantment. But fairy-tale villains are rarely without their own peculiar charm.
Bold black lines and energetic washes of turquoise, green, orange, red and pink create a lively, theatrical composition. The figures seem almost to tumble across the paper, caught in a moment of unfolding drama.
I love the freedom of allowing a drawing to move beyond what I can see towards what I can imagine. Sometimes the most interesting characters appear when I stop trying to control the story.
A wonderfully whimsical original artwork for anyone who loves fairy tales, theatrical characters and the imaginative world of The Nutcracker.
One of five original paintings
The Mouse King belongs to a set of five colourful mixed media paintings created during the Royal Drawing School's Live Studio sessions in December 2025.
Each painting is an individual, one-of-a-kind artwork, but together they create a lively world of characters, colour and storytelling.
The Mouse King makes a particularly entertaining companion to The Gift, with its mysterious crowned character.
He also provides a wonderful contrast to Sugar Plum Fairy, whose colourful kingdom of sweets and fairy-tale castle belong to the more enchanting side of The Nutcracker.
Together with Dance of the Snowflakes and the remaining painting in the set, these works would make a delightful group display, particularly in a child's bedroom, reading corner or family space.
