Music Night - Original Charcoal Drawing of Live Music

There is something wonderful about live music.

The energy of the musicians, the rhythm that fills the room and the pleasure of sharing an evening with people who have come together simply to enjoy themselves.

Music Night is an original charcoal drawing created during a lively bluegrass jam session at Bloomell - Cheesmeye, a historic café and cultural meeting place in Sissach, Switzerland.

Capturing the music as it happens

I spent a delightful period working at Cheesmeyer, drawing and painting the people, concerts and everyday activities that give this remarkable building its character. You can read a press text (in German) published in the Volksstimme newspaper about the event here.

One evening, a group of musicians gathered for a bluegrass jam session.

I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the occasion, not simply record the people in front of me.

Drawing musicians as they perform is a fascinating challenge. Nobody stays still for long! The music continues, the performers move and I have to respond quickly, trusting my eyes and my hand.

Charcoal is a wonderful medium for this. Its expressive lines, rich blacks and soft greys allow me to capture movement, gesture and atmosphere directly.

The warmth of being together

What particularly interested me during my time at Cheesmeyer was the warmth I felt emanating from the building, its guests and its staff.

It is more than a café. It is a place where people meet, share stories, enjoy music and feel part of a community.

I love drawing these moments of human connection.

Look closely at the people in Music Night. Who are they? What are they thinking? Can you almost hear the music?

Perhaps you can imagine pulling up a chair, ordering a coffee and joining them.

A wonderful companion to Musik im Cheesmeyer

Music Night looks particularly striking paired with my original charcoal drawing Musik im Cheesmeyer.

While Music Night captures the lively atmosphere of a bluegrass jam session, Musik im Cheesmeyer depicts jazz musicians Ben Zahler on flute and Lorenzo Vitolo on piano.

Both were drawn during live performances at the same historic café.

Their expressive charcoal marks, shared subject and contrasting formats make them natural companions.

Displayed together, they celebrate the joy of music, the energy of performance and the wonderful connections that music creates between people.

Bring the atmosphere of live music into your home

Measuring 94 × 64 cm, Music Night is a substantial original charcoal drawing with a lively, expressive presence.

It would look wonderful in a living room, music room, rehearsal space or anywhere people gather to enjoy art and conversation.

For musicians, performers and music lovers, it offers something particularly special: the memory of a live performance, captured directly as it happened.

An original drawing celebrating music, friendship and the irreplaceable atmosphere of being there.
