In In the Ground, Sibylle Laubscher takes us beneath the surface, into a world of construction materials, pipes, cables and intersecting structures. Bold diagonal lines cut across the composition, creating a dynamic interplay of shapes, textures and colours.

Rich terracotta reds, golden yellows and deep blues are brought together through the expressive language of traditional woodcut printing. The rhythmic carved marks suggest the rough textures of earth, stone and machinery, while the overlapping forms create a sense of depth and movement.

Part of the triptych Building a Better World, this artwork explores what lies beneath the visible world and the foundations upon which our modern lives depend. While the other prints in the series focus on human activity and supervision, In the Ground turns our attention towards the materials, infrastructure and physical processes that make construction possible.
