Tied to the Kitchen Sink - Original Acrylic Painting
Tied to the Kitchen Sink: More Than Just the Washing Up
Who says a kitchen sink is just a kitchen sink?
Tied to the Kitchen Sink is an original acrylic painting on paper, inspired by the kitchen of a mountain hut at 2,100 metres in the Swiss Alps, where I spent four summers painting.
I have always been fascinated by the beauty of ordinary objects, especially those that bear the marks of everyday use. This old kitchen sink, with its familiar surroundings and quiet domestic character, caught my eye as a subject for painting.
But the title carries a second meaning.
To be tied to the kitchen sink is an expression that evokes the traditional confinement of women to domestic duties. As a female artist, I am interested in the ways these expectations have shaped women's lives, their independence and their opportunities to pursue their own ambitions.
The kitchen can be a place of warmth, nourishment and companionship, but it has also been a symbol of restriction. This painting plays with that contradiction, celebrating the visual beauty of domestic life while questioning the assumptions attached to it.
With expressive brushwork and lively colour, an ordinary kitchen sink becomes something more: a small statement about freedom, equality and the right to choose how we live our lives.
And perhaps it would look particularly good hanging in a kitchen, a playful reminder that the washing up can wait!
A beautiful pairing with a shared message
Tied to the Kitchen Sink would look wonderful displayed alongside my painting Frau am Herd (Woman at the Cooker).
Both original paintings were inspired by the kitchen of the same Swiss mountain hut. Together, they explore the beauty of familiar domestic objects while gently challenging traditional expectations of women's roles.
With matching dimensions, they make a natural pair. Hung side by side, the two paintings create a colourful, humorous and thought-provoking conversation about domestic life and women's independence.
