Kaffeezeit | Coffee Time - Original Figurative Café Painting
Shall we meet for a coffee?
Such a simple invitation, and yet it can lead to the most wonderful conversations, unexpected encounters and friendships.
Kaffeezeit | Coffee Time is an original acrylic painting on acid-free paper, inspired by a delightful month I spent painting at Cheesmeyer, a historic café and cultural meeting place in Sissach, Switzerland. You can read a press text (in German) published in the Volksstimme newspaper about the event here.
In January 2023, I exchanged my studio for this lively café, spending my days observing and painting the people and activities around me.
Bloomell - Cheesmeyer is much more than a place to enjoy a cup of coffee. It is somewhere people gather, meet friends, enjoy concerts and participate in cultural events.
And, of course, there is always time for coffee!
The art of taking time
What interests me most when painting people is not simply what they look like, but the relationships between them.
The way someone leans forward to listen, the gestures that accompany a conversation, the quiet moments when people sit together without needing to say very much.
These little details reveal something about our shared humanity.
During my time at Cheesmeyer, I was fascinated by the atmosphere of the place.
There was a particular warmth that seemed to emanate from the building, its guests and its staff.
I wanted to capture that feeling in paint.
Rather than creating a photographic record of café life, I used expressive brushstrokes, colour and composition to communicate something of the energy and character of the people around me.
Working directly from observation is important to my artistic practice.
I love being immersed in a place, responding to the changing light, the movement of people and the unexpected moments that unfold before my eyes.
In a café, nothing stays still for very long!
Someone arrives, another person leaves, a conversation begins, a cup is placed on a table and suddenly a completely new composition presents itself.
It is a wonderfully lively way to paint.
A little world of its own
I have always been fascinated by the beauty of everyday life.
We often look for extraordinary experiences in faraway places, yet some of life's most meaningful moments happen much closer to home.
A familiar café, a friendly face, a good conversation or simply the pleasure of sitting somewhere and watching the world go by.
These ordinary moments are not ordinary at all. They are the fabric of our lives.
Kaffeezeit | Coffee Time celebrates this simple pleasure of being together.
I love the idea that a painting can invite us into another world, encouraging us to imagine the stories of the people we see.
So take a moment to look.
Who can you see?
What are they talking about?
Are they old friends, colleagues or perhaps two people meeting for the very first time?
Would you like to join them?
And, most importantly, what would you order?
Bring the warmth of café life into your home
At 64 × 50 cm, Kaffeezeit | Coffee Time is an original figurative painting that would bring warmth, character and a sense of human connection to a living room, dining room, kitchen or study.
It would be particularly appealing to someone who loves café culture, conversation and the pleasure of gathering around a table.
Perhaps it will even inspire you to invite someone over for coffee.
After all, there is always time for a good conversation.
A little piece of café life, full of warmth, character and the beauty of everyday human connection.
