Bedside Books: A Little Reading Before Bed

Do you have a pile of books beside your bed, waiting patiently to be read? And do you wish you had more time to read them?

Bedside Books is an original mixed media painting on paper, celebrating the comforting presence of books and the worlds of thought, imagination and discovery they contain.

This particular pile of books sat beside my own bed. I was struck not only by the beauty of their arrangement, but also by what they had in common: each explores aspects of womanhood, creativity and the experience of being female.

At the top sits Hagitude by Sharon Blackie, a wonderful exploration of the second half of a woman's life and the wisdom that comes with age. Beneath it is The Baby on the Fire Escape by Julie Phillips, about the challenges of combining motherhood with an artistic life. And then there is A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women by Siri Hustvedt, exploring art, perception and the ways we see ourselves and others.

These are books that have accompanied my own thinking and artistic journey. Painting them was a way of celebrating not only the pleasure of reading, but also the conversations we have with writers, artists and thinkers across time.

With expressive brushwork and a lively composition, this contemporary still life transforms an ordinary bedside scene into something more personal: a small portrait of the mind.

And if you hang it beside your bed, you can enjoy the satisfaction of having a wonderful collection of books without actually having to find the time to read them all!
