A gathering of people, a moment in time, a world of stories.

A busy café comes alive with conversation, quiet observation and the small gestures of everyday life. People sit together at tables, lean towards one another or look out into the room, each absorbed in their own thoughts and encounters.

A Café captures the fascinating theatre of human interaction. In the foreground, an intimate conversation unfolds, while other figures populate the space behind. At the centre, a woman looks directly towards us, inviting the viewer into the scene and blurring the boundary between observer and participant.

Rich purples, warm reds, golden yellows and deep greens create a vibrant atmosphere. Above the figures, a striking chandelier of glowing golden lights brings rhythm and movement to the composition. Expressive brushstrokes and shifting perspectives capture the energy of the room without losing the individuality of its inhabitants.

There is something endlessly fascinating about a café: strangers sharing a space, conversations overlapping, moments of connection and solitude existing side by side. The painting invites us to linger and imagine the stories behind each face.

An original contemporary figurative painting celebrating the richness of everyday life, human relationships and the beauty of being together.

On display for the first time since its making in Basel from mid-November
