Live Drawing on BBC Radio 2, The Scott Mills Breakfast Show!

What a week! I wrote to Scott Mills (whom I listen to every morning) asking if I could come and draw him in the studio in Basel, reporting on Eurovision, and he said YES!!!

On Friday, 16th May I arrived at the SRF studios in Basel at 8.30am with prepared concertina sketchbooks, pens and drawing equipment. I was made to feel very welcome by the whole team  even given some BBC milk for my coffee - and met Conchita Wurst and team on the sofa before entering the studio. What a pleasure! Such a wonderful person!

Then after a quick "hello" on air I settled down to drawing from observation. Pretty scarey I can tell you! Not only was Conchita Wurst the Friday morning guests, but Graham Norton was there too! At first my pen wobbled slightly from nerves, so I warmed up drawing the team members. I managed to make three drawings of the three super stars and was able to present Graham, Conchita and Scott each with a drawing of the morning's program.

It was simply an amazing experience, I am super grateful for the BBC Radio 2 team being open to my suggestion. Not only was I drawing - but the nationalities present and where I was, was a culmination of my life - I grew up in the UK, am a British citizen, I was born in Switzerland, am also a Swiss citizen, and I lived in Vienna, Austria for 8 years, where I was the first living artist to decorate the mug for Schönbrunn Palace. What more could an artist full of dreams wish for?

Graham Norton said, "this is the best Eurovision souvenier I've ever had!" about my drawing.

To celebrate this event I have uploaded work inspired by Basel - so you have something to take home with you and remind you of this amazing weekend! There's something for every budget - my Basilea hand printed woodcut is a real bargain ;-)

The River: atmospheric painting of the Rhine

Window to Happiness: sunny image of people enjoying time on a restaurant balcony next to the Rhine

Basilea: handburnished, handprinted woodcut

To make sure I was properly warmed up and sketching fast, I drew each of the Eurovision semi finals from the TV...and made countless sketches of Scott, Graham and Conchita from moving instagram images.
